Dear Ald. [Alderperson Last Name],
My name is [supporter name], and I am your constituent in Ward [x] at [address]. I am emailing to express my support for O-35-25 to adopt Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) for Annapolis City Elections starting in 2029.
Ranked choice voting, also known as instant runoff voting, is an innovative and proven voting method that would give Annapolis voters more power and make their voices heard:
- Stronger Representation - Ranking candidates allows voters to better express their preferences without worrying their vote will be wasted. Three of the past 8 mayoral races have had a non-majority outcome with split votes among the Democratic, Republican, and independent candidates. RCV can eliminate the need for strategic voting and encourage more people to run for office. By ensuring candidates are elected with a clear, winning majority, our representatives better reflect the community.
- Voters are Ready - Recent studies and exit polls in RCV cities show that voters overwhelmingly understand and like ranked choice voting. We have clear evidence in Maryland and across the United States that RCV promotes voter engagement and participation, and supports more diverse legislative bodies.
- Annapolis is Ready - Over 14 million voters participated in ranked choice elections in 2024. More than 50 jurisdictions across the United States use RCV; including Maine, Alaska, Santa Fe, NM, Charlottesville, VA and Takoma Park, MD. Washington, D.C. will use RCV starting in 2026. A wealth of data, best practices, and expertise provides the city with a roadmap to simple and effective implementation with current voting systems.
I urge you to support O-35-25. RCV and give us the ability to express our preferences, without worrying that our vote will be wasted. Thank you for your consideration!
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
